Subsequently, the pathological tissue changes develop after 12 weeks. Experimental contamination is performed by introducing bacteria into the muzzle, or through the nozzles. Most investigators have utilized 6- to 8-week-old male Syrian (golden) hamsters weighing about 60–100 g with the aim of studying colonization and infections of gastrointestinal tract, less frequently of other organs, as well for research of chemotherapy compounds. The natural resistance of the hamster to infections is well recognized, and it is known that normal (untreated) hamsters are highly resistant to colonization and infection. Two features make it particularly useful for scientific research: a high tolerance to alcohol (relatively to body mass), which enables its use in development of medicaments soluble in alcohol, as well as medicaments addressed to patients addicted to alcohol, and people of high susceptibility to infections, which makes it useful in the study of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Brucella infections, as well as flu, rabies, foot-and-mouth disease, and tularemia and finally, the hamster may be used to investigate mechanisms of tumor diseases.
