![]() This opens up the question of how emotions, commodities and modes of portrayal mutually constitute identity and body-images since the Renaissance as the first age when fashion became more widely available in Western society. The extreme preoccupation with clothes and how they are worn and when is very close to the concerns and obsessions of Matthaus Schwarz as Renaissance man. Our protagonist Matthew Smith and the story that unfolds through the five images embody these agendas and shows how closely tied they are to our fashion choices. Maisie and Bella find this period of a young person's life particularly interesting and potent, when there is a lot of experimentation with identity combined with the quest for love. We selected five paintings from the original book to reference from a decade of Schwarz's life between the ages of 17 to 27. Ulinka was been able to introduce the history about Schwarz, which added richness and informed all the details in both garments and settings. Bella has been able to add personal sensitivity to the contemporary garment design, the scenes are all set in London, our native city, in locations that Maisie is familiar with and has her own personal connection to. By conceiving a new tale we have been able to depict a story set in the modern day and in surroundings that are special to us. Compositions are referenced, as well as colours and shapes of the new garment designs, but with a contemporary narrative featuring modern garment design. However, there are alternative theories as to why the codpiece. So instead of helping to conceal the genitals, the codpiece emphasized them. The series tells a fictional modern-day narrative that is inspired by Matthäus Schwarz, a 16th century German accountant, who recorded his clothes in what has become known as 'The First Book of Fashion'. ![]() ![]() ![]() It is developed in collaboration with Cambridge History PhD student Sophie Pitman.
